NanoDay is a biannual event focused on bringing the concepts of nanotechnology to today's classrooms. The next NanoDay, which is our fourth, promises to continue be a fun learning experience for the teachers and students who participate. "Why do you do this event?" The National Science Foundation now estimates that the United States will need 2 million nanotechnology workers in the next 10-15 years (From www.nano.gov (near bottom of page)). Therefore, nanomaterials and nanotechnology have become critical educational and research thrusts in the United States. The New Jersey Commission on Higher Education (NJCHE) has recognized the need to train people in these important fields to take positions in the New Jersey high tech workforce. In 2001, the NJCHE awarded our department significant funding to create a new nanomaterials/nanotechnology undergraduate curriculum. We hold NanoDay to introduce our nanomaterials curriculum to New Jersey secondary school science teachers and students.
"What is NanoDay, anyway?" During this half-day program, participating teachers and supervisors will receive an orientation about the curriculum as well as an overview of current Nanomaterials Science and Engineering (NMSE) research and career opportunities. School of Engineering faculty will also demonstrate experiments that teachers can incorporate into their lesson plans. Each teacher will receive “Nano-in-a-Box”, a kit that contains curricular materials and the tools necessary to conduct experiments in class with their students. Lastly, teachers will also have an opportunity to meet informally with program faculty during lunch. "Who is invited and when is it?" We would like to extend an invitation to secondary school science teachers and science supervisors to participate in this free, half-day “teach the teachers” program about our exciting, new undergraduate NMSE curriculum on on Saturday, March 6 from 9:00a.m. – 1:00p.m. In addition, we would like to encourage you to bring interested students with you. We will have an open house during which they can meet with current undergraduates who are enrolled in the nanomaterials program, speak with program faculty, tour our facilities, and participate in hands-on demonstrations of current experiments. Tentative Schedule
I cant' come to NanoDay, but I'd like to tell some of my colleagues about it. The number of
